I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but I really can't say that I like Christmas. When I was much younger, I'd look forward to it, because of the presents. I suppose once I got older, and toys gave way to socks and jeans, some of the fun was lost.
However, I think the bigger frustration is the expectations placed by others that you get them something that they will enjoy. I have been married for over three years, and this will be my fourth married, and 10th total Christmas that my wife and I have been together.
How do you find something that will simultaneously tell her you love her, be somehow at least practical, not be overly expensive (we are on a budget after all) and not be a repeat of something I've already done. Oh, and don't forget, I hate the cliche. I gave her a necklace last year, which was already close enough on the cliche, and none too good on the budget, but at least she appreciated it, wears it constantly, and wasn't a repeat of something I'd already done.
But what about this year now? Jewelry falls on the repeat and potentially cliche, not to mention potentially expensive if it's anything decent.
I guess I wouldn't mind so much, if it didn't feel like there was some sort of high expectation.... and a frequent let-down.
Husband of the year I am not.
